Bad decision for Northbridge

Rob Broadfield Comment, The West Australian
December 11, 2010,

Some days you've just got to shake your head in disbelief.

When WA Director of Liquor Licensing Barry Sargeant last week denied restaurateur Nic Trimboli a licence for his new Northbridge restaurant, he effectively said "no" to bringing an end to the area's reputation as ground zero for trashed and aggressive trouble makers.

Mr Trimboli's stylish restaurant, while not a panacea to Northbridge's social ills, might well have been a game changer, attracting a cashed-up, more sophisticated crowd to the area.

If a government or local authority wants to clean up and make safe a nightclub/restaurant precinct, it must first use its planning powers to changes the streetscape. This the East Perth Redevelopment Authority has done spectacularly well, with the refurbishment of William Street, north of the Horseshoe Bridge.

Mr Trimboli's restaurant was to have been a tenant in one of the newly-minted buildings.

Secondly, government must allow, promote even, the inclusion of high-end restaurant and entertainment businesses. Diverse dining and entertainment options will make the streets safer as the balance of patrons reflects a wider cross section of the community.

Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi's scathing appraisal of Mr Sargeant as being out of touch and, presumably, out to lunch is spot on.

Northbridge needs Mr Trimboli.

Mr Sargeant is an ass.

Man charged over Cottesloe Hotel assault

A 53-year-old Heathridge man suffered serious head injuries when he fell out a window at a Cottesloe pub after allegedly being shoved by a South Australian tourist.

Perth City detectives have charged the South Australian, 28-year-old Matthew Angus Morran, with assault occasioning bodily harm over the incident.

Police will allege the 53-year-old told the younger man off after he flashed other revellers in the Ocean Beach Hotel front bar about 6.50pm last night.

The 28-year-old then shoved the older man in the chest so hard he stumbled backwards into his chair and fell out an open window, police alleged.

He fell more than a metre to the footpath, smacking his head and being knocked unconscious.

He was taken to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, where he is in a stable condition.

Mr Morran allegedly fled after the incident and was arrested at a nearby hostel.

He will appear in the Perth Magistrates Court tomorrow.

Police said charges could be upgraded pending medical advice.

Commisioner says glass ban wont work

Commisioner says glass ban won't stop slashing with 67 attacks
Nicole Cox, police reporter From:PerthNow August 12, 2010 12:56PM
THERE have been 67 glass attacks in WA clubs this year - but banning glasses won't stop the horrific assaults, says Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan.
WA's top cop says outlawing drinking glasses from pubs and clubs would do little to avert slash attacks, with stubbies used in 70 per cent of glassings so far this year.
Police statistics reveal the shocking rate of glass attacks - about nine every month, or two a week.
Commissioner O'Callaghan said contrary to widespread community belief, beer stubbies and premix bottles had been responsible for most glass attacks in Perth so far this year - not glassware.

``Most of the damage caused had been by stubbies not with glasses,'' Mr O'Callaghan said this morning.
``To me, it's a bit of a surprise that most of the glassings have been caused by a simple insult.''
WA Police data shows that since January this year, there have been 67 glass attacks across the metropolitan area. Of those, just 30 per cent involved glasses as the weapon of choice.

Until this year police did not keep specific statistics on glass attacks, which had been captured under the offence of grievous bodily harm.

Mr O'Callaghan said while there was a maximum penalty of 14 years in jail for grievous bodily harm offences, the courts were not dishing out significant enough sentences.

``What we need to see is the courts to issue significant penalties for people who choose to cut someone else with a piece of glass,'' he said.

``I don't think we are seeing the upper end of grievous bodily harm fines or imprisonment being dealt out at this point in time. I think there's enough concern in the community for the courts to take a more severe view of this particular issue.

``What we have to do is come up with ways of minimising the risk to people who go to nightclubs. That does not necessarily mean that everybody has to drink out of plastic.

One of those ideas is to encourage venues to clear empty glasses quicker so they cannot be used as weapons, he said.

Banned From WA Hotels, Pubs and Clubs

Model is first woman banned from pubs

Eva Grace Scolaro, 24 who will be sentenced in the Perth Magistrate's Court on April 14, has been issued with a prohibition order which restricts her from entering any bar or nightclub in the State for two years.

The Perth "model" convicted of glassing a woman in a Northbridge bar has become the first woman to be banned from entering a pub or club in WA.

Scolaro, 24, has been convicted of unlawful wounding over the attack on a 26-year-old woman at a Lake Street venue in March last year.

From The West Australian Newspaper "Police said that during an argument, Scolaro grabbed the woman by the back of her dress and poured a drink on to her head. Scolaro then spun the woman around and smashed a glass into her face, leaving the victim with a deep cut to her left cheek and cuts to her forehead that needed stitches."

One Year Since Gemma Died

THE mother of teenage ecstasy overdose victim Gemma Thoms who died after passing out during last years Big Day Out music festival, will painfully return to the concert grounds today to hand out flyers and talk to those entering the gounds to raise awareness of the risk of taking drugs.

Peta will be standing at the main gate of the Claremont Showgrounds, one day to the year, before the first anniversary of her daughter's death in the hope others will not suffer the same fate as 17 year old Gemma.

Concert organisers have backed the courageous effort and have designed and printed a flyer that will include a photo of Gemma, warnings about drug use, and health information for every one of the near 40,000 expected to attend the sold-out music festival later today.

Gemma collapsed during the festival last year after taking three ecstasy pills on the way in because she was frightened about police sniffer dogs catching her with drugs.

Quality Tap Beer for My Function

I recently had a query from a good friend asking me "Where can I get a keg of Asahi or Heineken for my birthday party?". After ensuring my invitation for the party I was quite suprised how difficult it was to answer that question for him. It seems that over the last few years with the advent of the big pub owning companies the number of pubs offering the service had declined greatly.
In the future we will provide list of venues that have a commitment to service and supply of quality draft beer. In the meantime we are confident that the following company headed by a great fella who used to work for Lion Nathan Breweries is the best place to call.
They stock everything and they were the only people that were able to commit on one call to delivering the keg on the day we needed it. Oh and it showed up cold!....Nice
So if you want a great keg of beer call this guy
